He told his disciples that a prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home." Because in his own home his relatives and friends saw him as their blood, they couldn't think of him as someone holy. They knew who his earthly father and mother were. He was the son of a carpenter. They questioned his teachings, they questioned his words. In Mark 6 when Jesus preached the crowd was amazed at his wisdom and the miracles performed, but they didn’t understand where it came from. Because to them, he was just Jesus. He was just one of the guys!
Mark 6:5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus is letting us know that whatever ministry we partake in it’s going to be better received by strangers than those that we know. The people that know us are going to question our teachings and our wisdom because they are going to see us as that kid from the past. They, he or she barely made it through school and now he or she wants to teach me. You may have been the prankster at school. You may have been the child that was hit by a car and returned back to school forever changed. You maybe the school bully’s little sister or brother. You may get laughed at now! People may refuse to give you the time of day. Because they still see you as who you once were. Don’t let your past steal your self-esteem. Believe in the word of God and believe in him who is now inside you!
It isn’t the past that identifies you, it’s your actions and what you are doing today for the kingdom of God.
Jesus is saying don’t give up, press forward, go to new places with my word and they will receive you and accept me!
I look at the world around us and all the technology that’s available today. And, I think, Jesus would probably be one of those like me that would use the internet to reach the masses and set his appointed times to teach and preach the word of God. I don’t think he would just use the internet alone, he would do it all! Travel around the world, seeing new places and new faces!
What’s holding you back from your calling? Let the Holy Spirit lead you!
Isaiah 43:18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
