I am going to use the illustration of soap making because that’s what I do! In order to make soap, you have to have, oil, water, and lye. If you don't have the lye to harden the soap the other chemicals don't bond, and you don't have soap. The Holy Spirit is the bond that keeps Christians together. Without the Holy Spirit, we would fall weakness to the desires of the flesh and break up. But because we are new creatures in Christ, we have gotten rid of the fleshly desires and exchanged them for the Spiritual desires of wholeness. So now we have become one with the Holy Spirit. We have poured the Holy Spirit into our lives with total submission.
Have you ever noticed when you have a Christian with a non-believer they can't seem to bond? They share different interest. There's an instant hostility to that supernatural authority. They’re afraid that you can see through them so they feel uncomfortable with you. And for the most part, you can! We took in some kids that had been displaced and some of these kids you just couldn’t bond with. There were spiritual issues there as well as physical issues. The children were diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder. They couldn’t accept any authority from a parent figure and especially a female that represented the mother that had abandoned or neglected them. I would find these kids stealing and taking things from our home and giving it away to their friends parents’, the ones that they thought in their mind were more deserving than me. It became a constant battle a war zone between them of who could hurt me the worst. And these children couldn’t accept any discipline. If you took anything from them it was instant retaliation. They would target my furniture, clothes, car, anything that they thought meant something to me. This is how it is with the non-believer towards God. There’s an instant hate for the goodness that he represents that may have been missed out on their childhood. They couldn’t learn to trust a father figure growing up so they have the attitude how can I trust in God? Many times with a non-believer there’s a pain from the past. If you can get them to open up about their past and share their pain with you it can sometimes lead to accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. But many of these children with oppositional defiant disorder see themselves as demigods, they want you to put them first and demand it. And if not careful, you start worshiping them instead of the Creator. Many of these people after they grow-up are so set in their ways that it's hard for them to transform because they can’t conform to the Christian way of life. The desires of the flesh have become so strong that they feel more comfortable living in a life of sin. These are the people you see joining in today’s hate groups. They found a place in society where they’re accepted. And these people know nothing better than how to hate! But Paul is telling us because we have the Holy Spirit living in us that we desire the Spiritual things in life. We have a different vision than them. And because we do see different than them there’s going to be a constant battle between us. It’s a battle of good versus evil! The same battle that went on in the Garden of Eden. Today we just have different players! Like Shakespeare said life is a stage and everyone is watching!
Today, you don't even have to live a remarkable life performing miracles in the name of Jesus Christ. You can be born a Saint at birth.
