Nor will I be a pretender.
I will serve God and my country with all of my heart.
And when my heart grows faint,
I will not speak with words of selfish complaint.
But in that hour I will hold myself up like a proud saint.
It won’t come from physical strength.
But it will come from my long and dearest childhood faith.
That when I would hear in that thunderous hour, when my God would sternly speak; quietly and whisper to a frightened child, wait.
And speaking tenderly, I bowed feeling His Heavenly splendor.
With my soul at ease, I feel His rushing peace.
